San Pedro de Atacama is situated in the midst of a natural setting that is extraordinarily unique and impressive. With numerous spectacular landscapes and breath-taking scenes, it is a difficult place to leave without having seen it all.

Due to having been the most important cultural hub of the Atacameña people, this pre-Inca village is considered to be the Archaeological Capital of Chile. With approximately 1,500 inhabitants, “San Pedro” is currently one of the main tourist destinations of the country. As it is visited throughout the year by both Chileans and foreigners, you can hear a wide range of languages being spoken as you walk down the narrow unpaved streets, lined with colorful adobe houses. Many of these adobe houses have been converted into hotels and hostels, tour operators, souvenir stores, and restaurants with excellent cuisine (vegetarian, international and Chilean).
San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis located in the middle of the driest desert in the world – the Atacama Desert. It is 128 km south east of Calama, and sits at an altitude of 2,438metres.

Like many towns colonized by the Spaniards, San Pedro has a cobblestone central plaza, which is surrounded by narrow streets.
Among its main attractions is learning about the Atacameña culture by visiting ancient villages with centennial churches and fortress. You cannot fail to visit the impressive sites of the desert surroundings, such as the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon,) Valle de la Muerte (Valley of Death,) Salar de Atacama, (Atacama Salt Lake,) and Geysers del Tatio, to name some of the most outstanding.

The weather in San Pedro is very hot during the day, with temperatures falling abruptly as soon as the sun goes down. Upon nightfall, you will start to feel an intense cold that you will be sure to remember as one of the coldest in your trip through Chile.

On the way back from the Tatio Geysers, you can visit the small town of Machuca located more than 4,000meters high and practically uninhabited due to the drastic emigration of the families to neighboring towns. This situation has been slightly reversed thanks to diverse infrastructure projects by the San Pedro de Atacama Municipality. This can be appreciated by the return of some families, the reactivation of agricultural, tourism and pasture activities, and the resumption of cheese production. There, you will be able to try fried empanadas (pastries) and anticuchos (kebabs) made of llama meat. Machuca has a small and beautiful group of swamps where small families of flamingoes, ducks and seagulls live.
Approximate time of return to Calama is 03:30pm. Transfer to Calama Airport or bus terminal.

Recommendations: Take both warm and light clothing, sun protection and sunglasses. Full-day tours include breakfast, packed lunch, fruit and soft drinks.
