DAY 2: SAN JOSE / POAS VOLCANO -DOKA ESTATE / ARENAL
Breakfast at the hotel.

This day will be dedicated to appreciating the active volcanoes of Costa Rica.
Like the other volcanoes in the Central Volcanic Cordillera, the silhouette of Poás Volcano as seen from the Central Valley gives no hint of the power and pent-up fury below the surface. But once at the summit and standing on the crater's rim, it becomes easier to understand the forces that have shaped this towering massif. With a diameter of 1.5 km, the active crater is reportedly the widest of any volcano in the world. If it is clear enough to see to the bottom of the 300-meter deep crater, you will surely observe some type of activity ranging from fumaroles to bubbling emissions on the surface of the small rain-filled lake to actual geyser-type eruptions, but it is constantly changing. During the early 1990s, there was enough geyser activity to cause the lake to lose its water by the end of the dry season (April/May), this resulted in increased gaseous emanations that forced the park to close on a few occasions.

We will rejoin the road to Arenal area with a view of the Arenal Volcano.

Mount Arenal covered by its luxurious greenery was a quiet mountain until the morning of the 29th of July 1968. The volcano had been inactive for the last 3 thousand years. That morning it erupted in the most spectacular way: the earth started shaking, clouds of ashes rose to the sky and landed on the forest; women washing clothes by the river felt the water becoming hot and incandescent lava started pouring down the side of the volcano. After its awakening the volcano remained active, which has caused its perfect conical shape that means it has never had the time to be exposed to erosion. From its 5250 feet, the majestic volcano towers over the village of La Fortuna.

Dinner & Overnight at Arenal Springs 4*

DAY 3: ARENAL / MANUEL ANTONIO

Your guide will explain the great variety of plants, wildlife and lava rock formations found along the trail. Once on top of the lava flow you will have a beautiful view of Lake Arenal.
The hike ends at a viewing area where, weather permitting, you will be able to see red hot lava rolling down the side of the volcano (afternoon tour only).
During the tour, our experienced guides will provide interesting and educational information regarding the history of this active volcano and the National Park that surrounds it.

Jungle Crocodile Safari offers a tour specially designed for adventurers and bird watchers, yet safe for the whole family. The adventure takes place on the Tarcolés River, one of four rivers flowing out into the Nicoya Peninsula, and home to one of the world’s largest crocodile populations in the wild with individual crocodiles of up to fifteen feet long. In addition to the crocodiles, over fifty different kinds of birds can be seen on site, including the very rare scarlet macaw and a great variety of resident and migrant waterfowl. Iguanas and Jesus Cristo lizards are very common as well.
Tour time is two hours long. Our bilingual guide offers expert orientation about the crocodiles and other associated wildlife.
On the way downstream, the boat heads along the Estero Guacalillo, a most awesome mangrove ecosystem that features four different species of mangrove trees. In addition to sightseeing, photography and videotaping are permitted. You will receive a bottle of cold drinking water along with a brochure that shows all 56 bird species commonly sighted along the river.
